Sharing external drive

My PC OS is Vista Home Premium on Acer.
I have connected an external HD (SimpleDrive 1 TB)to the PC via USB2.0. Properties of this external HD shows sharing: Not Shared. Therefore, when I open any file, make a change on the content of the file, and try to save it, the PC tells me that the file is read only, thus forcing me to save it under a different file name or just give it up altogether. How can I change the sharing status from Not Shared to Shared? A book published by MS says that you can control the status but doesn't show exactly how.
