Have seen postings recommending running sfc /scannow. What is this and what does it do please?

System File check. Checks the windows system files for any corrupt ones and prompts to replace if found.

To run sfc, you need to do it in the command prompt.

START>RUN>type "cmd" (or "command" in Win 98)

then type "sfc /scannow" and make sure you include the space after "sfc"

A more simple method is Start>Run>(key in SFC or sfc)>OK.

The SFC panel will then appear and you can run it as required for either a full check or to find/extract a particular file.

The SFC command will remain in the drop down menu for future use.
