Set up a wireless network with a ethernet nic card

I want to link my pc and laptop to each other and to my broadband connection. I have bought a wireless adsl kit for notepads. I have connected the pc to the 'gateway' using my ethernet nic pci card. When I run the software provided to install, I get an error message 'Unable to connect to the router'.
All the lights are on at the gateway.
I used to use the ethernet nic card to do a cross over connection to my laptop, and my adsl connection wsa via my usb port.
This is one of those .. The computer says NO moments.

Are you using the same crossover cable as you used to use before? This could be the source of teh problem as the new router may not support use of this cable - you may need a standard (i.e. non-crossover cable)

Nope, I am using the newly supplied cable (even though I was tempted, because they look the same)
