services stopped

I have noticed that some of the services on my computer have stopped without me having any input.
the three that have been a problem is Bakground intelligent service, windows installer, and microsoft security center.
I put them on auto and started them but when I boot up at a later date they have been stopped
I have windows xp home with sp2,and have avg, zone alarm, spybot, adaware plus windows defender.
All are updated and used frequently.
any help would be appreciated.

see errors like this happening when there is some driver problem with the NIC.

Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the network card device, Action menu, "Uninstall", then restart Windows, to find
the device drivers again automatically.

i thought that was the meaning of auto, ie when needed it starts etc

I thought that it would start automatcaly with auto as well.

Double click on each of those services > Dependencies tab. Check which service(s) they depend on and ensure that those are set to Auto as well.
