Installed it ages ago without any ill effects, I would go for it if I was you.

While you can.
with Vista nearing its end and 7 on the horizon , you may not have many chances to do so
Though it is available indipendantly if you Google for it.

A bit of PC housekeeping works wonders before installing a Service Pack.

Uninstall all those programs you never use.

Use click here

Full AV and anti-malware scans.

Use msconfig to disable all those programs and processes which you don't need to run at startup.

Defrag the HDD.

I've installed SP3 several times, including the second beta and full version on my system, on various setups.

The only problem I had was that a wireless modem router's driver needed to be reinstalled on a friend's system.

As a matter of course I took most of the measures already mentioned by Clapton is God i.e. a full virus scan and a defrag, System Restore point before and after installing SP3 and a backup beforehand.
