serious freeze problem

  Quilljar 20:26 28 Feb 08

I have been trying to fix a laptop with Win XP that freezes when you attempt to turn off any window. It has become unworkable. I have system restored; cleaned the registry, used all the cleaners and antispy, anti virus programs I have, using Safe Mode.
I have now re-installed a different copy of Win XP which works to some extent, but the same problems are happening.
Can anyone tell me what the main problem is likely to be?
I am suspecting that the HD has gone. The laptop is about three years old. My solution right now is to suggest to my friend that she ditches it and buys a new laptop.

Sometimes thats the only way, no point in spending money on it if you are not sure its going to resolve the issue..

something to try first tho, it may be a memory issue..

Win xp sp2 intel pentium 1.70 Ghz 593 Mhz
0.99 GB RAM

I am amazed by how little RAM, but it has been working away for three years or so

I am afraid that the computer will not work well enough to even install the test prog let alone use it. Thanks for the link though.
,I am using it on my own machine !
