When I attempt to add new hardware I no longer get the option to search the internet for drivers.

I've obviously done something wrong, do you have any idea what it was or how I get the option back?

Not really enough information in your post, but in a general sense:

IE> Tools> Internet Options> Programs> IE the default Web Browser> Make Default and tick Tell me if IE is not the default browser.

It may be already, in which case the problem may be specific to one program.

It's nothing to do with IE.

I add a new piece of hardware. When the "Add new Hardware" window appears there is no option to "Search the Internet for Drivers"

Only "Search the PC"

Now if I don't know what drivers I need but the computer does. I therefore need the internet option so the PC can find the drivers on the net.

XP, SP3. Dell 4600

What else do you need to know?

This may help;

Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware tab, click
"Windows Update", you will be offered 3 choices regarding internet access for hardware updates. Choose the one of the first two options. click here
