sending emails - security

I have a web site which allows people to forward email to me. I have seen sites on which the author needs to fill in a randomly generated series of letters before sending the email to stop automatic spamming. Anyone help me on how this is achieved please? I don't know what to Google to get the answer!

Those things are starting to be an absolute pain. Get yourself a secure Free PHP Mail Form click here and use that on your website, assuming your host supports PHP.

I hate CAPTCHAs, and so will many of your visitors. My eyesight is OK (albeit with glasses) and even I sometimes struggle to read them because they are quite often less than clear with letters that are too malformed and ambiguous. Good PHP filtering renders them of little additional value anyway, in my opinion.
