Sending email in Outlook on Windows XP pro+SP1

Can anyone please help with a minor niggle that is making my head a shed.
Just lately whenever I send an email, it now goes into my Outbox and sits there until I send it again. It never used to do this and the messages were always sent immediately. I also don't get the two small envelopes in the bottom right corner spinning round when sending or receiving mail. I have the box checked that states 'send/receive immediately' but to no avail. Have I accidentally changed a setting somewhere. Prior to this happening I installed Mailwasher Pro which is superb at hitting the spammers but I wouldn't have thought that this would be the cause.
Any help from anyone will be greatfully appreciated.

Graham
