Selective Startup

Hi - done a search but couldn't find what I needed.
Windows XP starts up with a message box saying I chose 'selective startup' - I didn't. Anyway - on the start up config box I select normal and apply. However this does nothing, just happens again next time I reboot. Can't do a restore as I had it turned off for a while (now back on). Had this a while but now getting on my nerves along with the Realplayer error I get - systemboothideplayer - which resists correction even by tweeking the registry ( I have temporarliy deleted Realplayer)
Any help with the startup config would be appreciated.
