Security Issues

My Avast anti virus is switched off and I can't get it back on.

My windows updates are also switched off and I can't get them back on either.

Went to 'security centre' pressed the button for 'turn on automatic updates'. A window then appeared with the message 'sorry the security centre could not update settings. Go to System in control panel and select 'Automatic'.' Well I did that and it still wont come on.

reboot and retry

a reboot should restart the service as it is now set to automatic.

after the reboot you should b able to restart the AV and auto updates in security centre.

Tried rebooting, but the problems remained. I sorted the Avast problem by removing Avast and re-installing. 'System' 'Automatic Updates' has 'Automatic Updates' selected, but in the 'Security Centre' they are still read as being switched off.

Start -run (search) type services.msc

check Background Intelligent Transfer is set to automatic and started.

While in Services make sure Windows update and Security center are switched to automatic and both are running.

Maybe also give MalwareBytes a run to see if it finds any problems. That is normally the first thing they do is stop the security programs from running.
