Security : disabling firewall to set up broadband?

It seems necessary to disable the firewall to set up broadband and the install process gets blocked. Most ISPs recommend doing this during install but how safe is it? I've heard PCs can be infected within minutes if they are unprotected when connecting to broadband internet, so why do ISPs give such unsecure advice .... one trojan / virus and your computer may become history !!

I have never disbaled a firewall whilst setting up broadband. I've attended to PCs where the firewall was disabled and as you say a virus got in quickly...

Set a Restore Point if using ME or XP and then continue.

Setting up Onetel got stuck at finding DNS stage and I had to disable the firewall for it to work, BUT the first advise they gave was disable the firewall ... and the setup was a 45 minute process !!!!!
