Security checks

I have used Symantec free security check and it reported 6 cases of open ports which are dangerous.
I then used the better known 'ShieldsUp' by GRC and it reported all ok, no open ports.
Is this possibly a case of Symantec trying to justify security upgrades which are not really necessary? or should I be questioning the validity of the 'ShieldsUp' report?
