Secure versus Unsecure

I do a lot of mobile roaming. I can connect to a free wireless network but it's unsecured. Is it safe? Can I, for instance, log into my bank account or email account without the info being intercepted?

Similarly, I also connect using Vodaphone's 3G network using a PC card. Is this a secure or unsecured network? The same question applies re bank accounts and email.

Many thanks in advance

I would suggest *NOT* using online banking over an unsecured WiFi connection, with a public WiFi Hotspot or via a 3G mobile connection. Email is less critical, unless you are sending very sensitive content or attached files.
