Secure remote control with pcAnywhere

I'm aiming to use pcAnywhere or VNC to allow access to friends/families computers to assist with "my computer's not working properly" telephone calls.

I can do this with a modem easily enough, but as most are on broadband TCP/IP would be preferred, if it could be secured.

Does anyone have any experience of this or have a recommended web site

If they're mostly using XP, then remote asistance would seem to be ideal.

Three of the four are on Windows 2000 and unlikely to upgrade at the moment, but it's worth remembering. Is it secure ?
