I have a second monitor plugged into my laptop. When I switch on the laptop the screens are identical as booting up takes place. After a short time the laptop contiues, but the monitor screen turns blue (like the "screen of death" but without any message.
Any ideas?

The monitor screen goes blue because Windows has to decide which display to load. It loads the laptop display driver and forgets about the monitor.

You'll need to right click on the desktop and go into display settings to select the monitor display.

and then click second monitor and click extend my desktop to this monitor.
