Second O/S on external hard drive

Can you put win 98 on external hard drive and boot from that drive?

Escavar,

That depends entirely on how the external hard drive is connected. However, Win 98 must be installed on the first hard drive and within the first 1024 cylinders (or thereabouts) so the external drive will have to be seen by the BIOS as the first drive.

If it is a USB connection, I suspect that the answer is no. If it is SATA or SCSI, the answer is maybe.

Felix

So I'd be better off having secondary internal hard drive on sata then tell bios to boot from there?

Escavar,

Yes, that would be fine. Change the boot order in the BIOS to determine which OS to boot from. Note that the drive letters on the disks will change depending on which drive you boot from.

The benefit is that you can share data files between the 2 OSs provided that the file formats are compatible.
