Second Hard drive installation problems

Can any one help / advise please.
Was installing a second hard drive onto my computer last night (following instructions from the HD suppliers) I am no expert when it comes to upgrading computers but i thought i would give it a go. Got quite excited when everything was connected up and the power was turned on. On the bios screen (windows xp) the second HD was detected and everything thing seemed ok - windows xp loaded. However when it came to the log in screen the computer just froze - wouldn't enter the desktop.
Are there any settings i need to change in the bios? I didn't think i would need to download the SATA driver for the motherboard as there is already a SATA HD on my computer.
Does any one recognise what i have done wrong and that can help
Thank you
