Search assistant fails to respond

I'm using Win XP Professional

When I attempt to click on Search in an explorer window to search for files or folders on my local hard disks, search assistant fails to start.

Are there some settings I've modified that I need to change. Or what do I have to reinstall

I've already tried re-installing using
windows\inf\srchasst.inf
but that makes no difference

Many thanks for any help you can offer

Peter

Is search assistant a legitimate windows application or a spyware module? It would be worth checking for spyware.

Also try the system file checker

start

run

sfc /scannow
