Seagate FreeAgent Theater, invalid mp4 files

I've just purchased a Seagate "FreeAgent Theater" device to view computer files on my TV. The files are mp4 (a format that the user guide says it supports), but every file comes up as "invalid file". I've used VideoLAN 'Convert' function to produce files in a few other formats that I *think* it might support (although I don't really know which settings are best). I've managed to convert the .mp4 files to .mpeg files where the video is clear, but can't get any sound. The wiring is deifnitely correct -- I just can't get the right audo setting. Any suggestions please? especially the audio setting!
[The VIDEO is typically about 2000 kbps, 25 frames/second; the AUDIO is 128 kbps, 2 channel, sample rate 48kHz. Usually I get no sound at all; although if I tick the keep original sound> option, FreeAgent says "audio data receive error (too slow)" but I can't find a setting/format that actually produces sound]
