seagate external harddrive doesnt spin up

My external hard drive isn't being recognised by the laptop. It is just making beeping noises. Is there anything I can do to get it to work, and if not, who should I send it off to, and how much can I expect it to cost?

Could be any of several causes:

Harddrive dead

not enough power (try with laptop plugged into mains - not on battery power)

faulty cable

faulty usb port

Is it making the same noise as in this youtube vid?

Tried it with laptop plugged in

Tried it with different usb cable

Tried it in different ports

Sounds a bit like the youtube link

I'm thinking it sounds dead - in which case, can anyone recommend a UK company to go to to get the data back?

Open the enclosure and try it plugged into a PC internally.

You may need SATA data and power cables, if none spare. Or disconnect the optical drive if that is SATA.

Seatools may help to see if anything is working or if completely dead.

Data Recovery is hugely expensive and not practical for most home users.

double click "My Computer" right click on the drive it if shows then click properties/tools/ check drive and do a full scan and auto fix faults
