Error: "Norton AntiVirus has encountered an internal program error. . ." (3005,545) when starting Norton AntiVirus 2004 Options

Situation:
When opening Options in Norton AntiVirus 2004 or Norton AntiVirus 2004 Professional (collectively referred to as NAV in this document), you receive the error message: "Norton AntiVirus has encountered an internal program error. Please uninstall and reinstall Norton AntiVirus." In the lower-left corner of the error message box, you see the numbers 3005,545.

Solution:
This error occurs when the NAV Option list is unable to communicate with a Script Blocking file called ScrBlock.DLL.

Follow the procedures in the order listed.

Verify that the Script Blocking registry entry is correct

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WARNING: We strongly recommend that you back up the registry before you make any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the keys that are specified. Read the document How to back up the Windows registry for instructions.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Exit all open programs.
On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
In the Run dialog box, type the following: regedit
Click OK.
When the Registry Editor opens, navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\ScriptBlocking

In the right pane, double-click the following value:

(Default)

In the "Value data:" field, verify that the entry matches the following:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ScriptBlocking\ScrBlock.dll

If the entry matches, then exit the Registry Editor and continue on to the section "Uninstall NAV, clean boot the computer and then reinstall NAV."
If the entry is different, then, in the "Value data:" field, type, or copy and paste, the following text:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ScriptBlocking\ScrBlock.dll

Click OK.
To test that the problem has been fixed, open NAV and click Options. If you do not see the error, then the problem has been fixed. Exit the Registry Editor and continue working in NAV. If you continue to see the error, then close NAV Options and continue with the next steps.

If the Script Blocking registry entry is correct, but the error continues
Re-enter the registry value with a short pathname.
Switch back to the Registry Editor.
Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\ScriptBlocking

In the right pane, double-click the following value:

(Default)

In the "Value data:" field, type, or copy and paste, the following text:

C:\Progra~1\Common~1\Symant~1\Script~1\ScrBlock.dll

Click OK.
Exit the Registry Editor.
Open NAV.
Click Options. If you do not see the error, then the problem has been fixed. Exit the Registry Editor and continue working in NAV.
If you continue to receive the error, then go on to the section "Uninstall NAV, clean boot the computer and then reinstall NAV."

Uninstall NAV, clean boot the computer and then reinstall NAV
For instructions on how to remove NAV, clean boot (or close all running programs) and then reinstall NAV, read the document How to completely remove Norton AntiVirus 2004 and then reinstall the program

If you did the registry changes & still couldn't get it to work try the uninstall/reinstall after carefully following their instructions.

"If you continue to receive the error, then go on to the section "Uninstall NAV, clean boot the computer and then reinstall NAV."

Uninstall NAV, clean boot the computer and then reinstall NAV For instructions on how to remove NAV, clean boot (or close all running programs) and then reinstall NAV, read the document How to completely remove Norton AntiVirus 2004 and then reinstall the program"

Good luck - you'll need it! Have had my share of uninstalling/reinstalling Norton products & it aint pleasant. G
