hi all. i'm having a nightmare. yesterday i used recovery disks on acer laptop, all has been fine but today the machine hibernated and now won't come back on. the hdd powers up but the screen doesn't. it's just blank. any ideas?

I can`t answer fully for laptops but assume they would be the same as desktops. When I had a similar problem using `Standby` it turned out to be a corrupt graphics driver was the cause. Have you updated the graphics drivers or is there a chance of corruption, if so perhaps a re-installation or roll back is the answer.

thanks for your reply john. i've managed tn get the screen back on by removing a dodgy memory module but now all it shows is a dark screen saying 'resuming windows' but it never does

I sort of have the same problem, but its from resuming from stand by. I found out about this problem and turns out i have to wait about 5 minutes before the screen comes on!

So maybe you can try waiting 10 mins maximum and see if it comes on??

Which operating system are you using?

Can you access the bios ?
If so,check the boot order is set to boot from cd/dvd as first boot device.

Boot order should look like;

Cd/dvd
Hdd
Usb
Floppy (if one exists)

" there anyway to force a boot from cd "

Only from the boot order in the bios.

Just to but in with a thank you. Have Vista Business which never recovered from sleep mode and had to switch off at mains socket. Altered the boot up as recommended above and comes back on.

Cheers
