Screen opens in power save mode

and then it goes blank and will not power up at all. Not sure what the problem is or how to solve it. Please be gentle.

It sounds as though the monitor is not getting any signal from the PC. Check that the cable is securely connected at both ends.

Otherwise, to determine whether the problem is with the monitor or the PC, you might need to connect the monitor to a different computer and the computer to a different monitor. If you don't have the necessary hardware yourself, do you have a friend whose PC/monitor you could try with?

thanks mgmcc, it's taken me a while but i've done the swaps and find that the monitors are working fine but see that the 'broken' computer's monitor is attached using some sort of adaptor into the computer. When i connect without it, the screen works but has the error message that it needs to be connected to a video connector.
I presume this is the silver adaptor - and that it is faulty? My son tells me this adaptor has been on for years.
Does this new information throw up any solutions - do I need a new adaptor?
thanks in anticipation
