Screen backlight failure on reaching low battery

I have a recurrent problem with my Toshiba laptop (1 year old) whereby the screenbacklight suddenly switches off when battery gets low (no warning alarm as previoiusly). Impossible to get light back.

It is not in standby or hibernation mode as Windows XP can be operated in a limited fashion by shining light onto screen. Will function normally when connected to external monitor.

Presumed to be hardware problem but cured temporarily by wiping harddisk.(big hassle!) A technician did restore it be changing battery settings in control panel but don't know how, and problem recurred.

Computer gives no alert of dysfunction and thinks it is working normally! Shows no sign of software incompatibility

Will not go into safe mode on pressing F8. Can you help? Thanks.
