screen appearance problem

My granddaughter had a pc 'built' for her. It uses Windows XP pro. three weeks after she had it delivered the welcome screen disappeared to be replaced with a black screen showing only a password box. She can log in but is worried about the screen appearance and vanished welcome screen. She shares the pc with her younger sisters. Is it something she /sisters have done inadvertently - or is it (this concerns me) a dodgy OS

Go to Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Change the way users log on or off. Tick the box labelled "Use the Welcome screen".

"or is it (this concerns me) a dodgy OS"

That's easy to check - have you get a genuine MS CD and some documentation?
Is there a label on the system with the Product Key on it (OEM copy) - or is the Product Key printed on the docementation (Retail Copy).
Did you pay for it?
