scratchy sound on AC'97 on-board soundcard

Hi,
The sound on my AC'97 has a horrible scratchy background noise very noticeable when I turn up the Volume Control even in the slightest.
Turning up Wave will increase the volume with no noise but up to a limit, but if I want to take it further using Volume Control the noise can be quiet deafening.

I tried downloading new drivers from Realtek site but still no joy.
Any suggestions? (NetHighStreet Athlon 1800+, win 2K)

Thanks

Kiko

Check the speaker plug in fully pressed in and in the correct socket. Try moving the speaker position. Is it set to use digital sound? if so try disabling this.

I'm pretty sure is not the speaker connection, I get the same noise when I plug the earphones in.
I'll try switching the sound to analog, although right now I can't quite recall where to find that setting.

Thanks
