My 'scanreg.exe /fix' has stopped running, I get a tick in box 'Looking for valid system registry keys' but >> in 'Checking system registry structure' and 0% in the bar at the bottom. What can I do to get it working again?

Further to the above posting, the process freezes on 'Repairing C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DAT

How do I find how big my system dat file is?

  JaßîsFaß ˜ 12:39 05 Feb 05

Start > Search > All Files and Folders > Enter 'system.dat' in the top box and click Search.

In Windows 98se it's SCANREG /RESTORE

My dat. file is showing to be 9.377mb, could this be the problem. I have already run Regcleaner twice, backed-up and deleted. Any other suggestions to reduce the size of the dat file?

Did you try adding smartdrive command as shown on link above which speeds up process?

If it's System.Dat you cannot do anything about it, but you can clean the Index.dat in Windows\Temp Internet files\Content IE5\Index.Dat
