scanning slides

Using a SnapScan e50 I normally get good results from glossy photos, text etc. With slides the results are patchy. From 2 colour slides of similar quality (same film) some results are ok others are murky and unacceptable.
Any ideas please?

I don't understand Plugins but I'll have a look.

I think part of the problem was the scan changing to grey scale or line art without me noticing.
Also, I have found than inserting the picture straight into an application such as Serif produces a better image
