Scanner puzzle

Just bought an A4 Canon flatbed scanner which comes provided with a stand so that it can be used in a vertical as well as a horizontal position. I'm trying to think how and when I would want to use it in a vertical position. There must be a demand for this feature otherwise Canon would not have developed it, but for the life of me I cannot think of an application. I know I should have other and better things to think about but to satisfy my curiosity has anyone any thoughts on this?

My Canon LiDE 50 came with a stand the same as yours. It can be used in two ways.

1) to store the scanner on it's edge when not in use if desktop space is tight then lay it down as normal to scan.

2) You can actually scan with it in the stand edgewise on if you wish, just hold the paper/photo against the glass until you close the lid, it will stay in position fine while the scan completes.
