I am posting this on behalf of a friend. He owns a Brother DCP 11OC and has installed at the drivers and software that cam with the printer/scanner. The printer is fine but the computers says that it cannot communicate with the scanner. It runs fine on his laptop but not on his PC.

Runs win XP

Are they using the same cables each time?

  barney1234568910 20:30 24 Aug 05

it is an all in one printer + scanner + copier connected by a USB lead. The printer works and so does the copier (stand alone)

thanks

I meant when you connect it to the laptop, is it the same cable as when connected to the PC? Unlikely to make a difference to be honest, but just a thought.

Check that nothing within MSCONFIG is disabled on the PC while enabled on the laptop; same too with the services.

start

run

msconfig

start

run

services.msc

Are both computers the same operating system?
It is well known that a scanner built for 98 will not transfer to XP very often -this is bacause apparently scanners in addition to drivers also have 'firmware 'inside to control scanning and tracking.
This being so a chip set up for DOS[98/ME] will not read data from a NTFS system[2000/XP]

Are you connected through a USB Hub or direct into computer?

  barney1234568910 21:05 24 Aug 05

everthing is the same.

thanks

they are both win xp and the printer is swapped between pc and laptop and connected directly each time

There may be too much load on the usb if you have other items plugged in try without them
