Scandisk and Defrag will not work

Hi can any one help. I have upgraded to a ntl anolouge modem using BTOpen World now I can not run scandisk and defrag. why does it not work.

Al, can you say what actually happens when you try to use defrag?

This is a notorious problem.

Restart your pc and hit CTRL when it changes to the second page in POST. It will then give you a few start choices. Select to start in 'Safe Mode'. Then run Scandisk(prob take about 3-5Hrs if 'Through' is selected and you got 30+gig disk.When its run its course then do defrag. Remember to not touch mouse or run other programs in either task as it can cause freezes. Good luck.

Do they tend to stop and start again?

If so you have something running in the background or a screensaver opens - close any programs etc and try moving the mouse every few minutes to avoid the screensaver or other power options operating.
