Is it possible to save a powerpoint file as an WMV file and still maintain its original settings (i.e., animations, etc.)?

NO not unles you want to spend alot of money , the only thing that come near is Powerpoint2DVD.

I have been looking into saving Power point to play on stand alone DVD players

You need to effectively set each of your animations as a new slide i.e. base slide + appear 1 as next slide +appear 2 as third slide etc.
Just as done in old style animation "flip books"

Save the slides as a photo slide show (best I found was Power Producer3) Nero can only handle99 slides in menu.

I used this to convert powerpoint to dvd for work. Play around with the resolutions to get best quality you can.
Very simple and easy to follow and you can get the camtasia program on trial to start with.

Hope this helps.
