To set Windows Update for downloading the updates for later installation
instead of installing now:

Go to Windows Update

Click on Personalise Windows Update (left column)

Click "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalogue under See Also
Click Save Settings button.

When you're ready to download:
Go to Windows Update

Click Windows Update Catalogue (left column)

Click on Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems (or, Find
driver updates for hardware devices)

Select your OS & click the Search button

Select what you want; Critical or Recommended
Select the downloads you want and go to the download basket.

click here for info from the Man.

Once you enter the catalog, click on the WindowsXP family, then select
the downloads, follow the prompts to add to the download basket, then
indicate where on your system you wish to save them. This will allow you
to download without installing in an executable format. You can copy
these files to CD for later use.

Hi, I think nick is saying that he has already downloaded the updates and installed them once, but now wishes to re install XP and then install the updates that he now has, without having to download them all over again. Question, can it be done?

As far as I am aware, he can't. Unless he copies, or downloads the updates into a different folder than the default "wutemp" one, they will be deleted after installation.

But....I'm open to correction here!!

Mmmmm, the problem is they are executable, don't know if this works but you could locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP and export all the updates to floppy disk????.

I'll give it a whirl tomorrow and see what happens.

you can order sp1 from ms by going onto their uk website, the only other thing i can suggest is to look around for discs that come with computer mags, ie windows xp, also if you have not got the latest updates you could down load them to disc to install when your ready.

Hi Nick,
you did not say why you want to reload XP, but my suggestion would be to "ghost" a copy of your hard drive.
