Terry - do I assume you're trying to sort your Gmail emails into categories and save them in folders, as you would on Outlook?

If so, then you need to read up on Gmail's 'Label' system, which performs a similar function, although (IMO) with much greater flexibility.

Why don't you configure Gmail so that you can retrieve mail with a POP3 program and then use Outlook to run it?

If you run IMAP in Google mail then the folders will be synced both on Google mail and on your email client, this is really usful as you have your email folders mirrored both in the email client and on Google, which is really handy when you are away from home and want to get to your email folders. Also you will be able to save your emails to an external folder if that's what you want to do.
