Should everything i.e. progs/files/shortcuts etc be saved before upgrading to xp?

You have 2 choices

A fresh install or

An upgrade

An upgrade keeps all your settings (desktop etc.) installed programs and crap.

A fresh install allows you to get rid of the crap and probably speed up your PC, but also means you have to reinstall any programs you require.

so if i go for a clean install, do i just save my files or progs too i.e. word, winmx, zonealarm, office etc.

Hi cham. Save all your files (not forgetting email dbx files, Favorites, Address book etc), but you will need to reinstall the programs. Downloadable programs such as ZoneAlarm, AdAware, Irfanview etc are probably best downloaded fresh once you have your new installation working so that you have the latest version. MS Word etc will need to be reinstalled from cd.
