Sata and USB

Why don't they use sata cables and connections rather than USB for portable hard drives? As it is faster! Like having Sata connector on the case of a computer?

Sounds like a good suggestion but the external drive would still require power from somewhere.

You can get external drives with eSATA connection. Snag is that not many PC's and very few laptops have eSATA.

As Woolwell says there is eSATA. This seems to be in decline as its been overtaken by USB 3 which is 10 times faster than USB 2 and at around 5Gbs isnt far short of the SATA 3 speed of 6Gbs so I guess there is no longer a need for an external SATA connection.
