A friends system has broken and he has asked me to install his hard drive in to my system in order that we can recover files - mainly family photos. The only problem I can forsee is that my system has the newer style SATA (?) drive with a small cable running to it. His drive is the older stlye with a wide ribbon cable. Can I connect his drive in place of my DVD drive which has a ribbon cable while we transfer files? If not, is there another way anyone could recommend? Thanks

Yes.

Just set the jumper on the hard drive to the same as the jumper on the DVD drive i.e. master if it's at the end of the ribbon cable or slave if it's attached to the middle connection of the ribbon cable.

Yes it will fit the IDE ribbon cable. Fit the cables as they are on the CD dvd but you may need to set the little jumper on the edge of the drive to slave if the cable as more than one drive on it
