SATA Drive Specifications

Please can someone confirm the difference, if any, between drives marked up as SATA II and those marked as SATA 300?

I know that SATA was originally classed as 150 and think that when the speed was raised to 300 some manufacturers called it SATA II whilst others referred to it as SATA 300. Is this correct?

Many thanks in advance.
