Age of machine? sounds as if 4/5 years old or more.

Older boards did not recognise sata and extra raid drivers were loaded to run sata from XP.
If there was only a sata drive the drivers need to be loaded at the F6 prompt during initial install of XP.

Check if there is a enable sata drives / enable raid in BIOS.
