I have a Samsung ML1210, which has worked fine until now, it has printed 8,600 pages. I am now getting burning type smells as it starts up, the paper gets very hot. Have checked there is nothing stuck or that it is dusty. Any ideas, Is it time to replace it?

It sounds like it's maybe on its way out. A printer engineer could confirm either way, but would probably charge quite a lot for the priveledge. The burning smell and heat would worry me from a safety point of view and that alone may be reason enough to replace it.

This is what I was thinking, so have unplugged it for now.

Sounds a bit like the thermostat controlling the heater-roler has stuck. Last desperate measure before binning it, take the unit apart, find the heated roller assembly, give it a technical "bash" with a screwdrivr handle, and pray !
