Safely remove hardware icon missing

I just went to remove one of my extenal drives from the PC when I noticed that the icon for safely removing hardware was not on the taskbar.Why would it be missing and how do I get it reinstated.Is it safe to dissconnect a external drive without using that Icon and what would be the result.I have always clicked on it before removing any hardware.n

I don't know which OS you have but this used to work for XP

From a command window run:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

This will bring up the add remove wizard.

Problems again with PCA - painfully slow tonight. Probably the reason for the double post.

Try clicking the arrow in the notification area to show hidden icons.
