Safely Remove Hardware - C:

I have recently noticed the Safely Remove Harware icon appearing on startup. It is inviting me to remove my hard-drive! I have not installed any new hardware recently but did get a virus alert and had the java console start for no apparent reason. At the same time the task manager had problems starting up. I've run both Norton AV, Adaware and Hijack this and there seems to be nothing unusual.

Any ideas?

My Remove icon sometimes appears for no apparent reason, but it doesn't suggest I remove the HDD. However have you tried Start/Properties/Taskbar Tab/Customise/ Right click on the remove hardware icon and select "Always Hide". Another thought is to download and use Taskbar Repair tool Plus click here. but I can't see why the task manager should be affected. Does it work just using Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
