I have an USB ASDL modem and from the moment i have installed it an icon has appeared in my system tray which asks if i want to remove my modem. How can i get rid of this in my system tray?

You can't - its there for a reason.

Right-click the notification area, and selecting Properties. Under the Notification area heading, click Customize (Select Hide Inactive Icons if its greyed out). Find the Safely Remove Hardware icon and select Always hide in the Behavior column next to it (press OK and Apply to back out).

thanks, but it's still there when you click on the arrow to show hidden icons, is there no way of getting rid of it altogether?
