Safe Mode question

When I use F8, or F5, in an attempt to access Safe Mode, I get what appears to be a DOS Screen with a list of Drivers on it. There appears to be no Cursor and the Screen does not respond to the Direction Keys or the Mouse.

Any ideas what is happening?

No Safe Mode.

Safe mode may not work in these situations:

•A mass storage driver (SCSI or IDE) is damaged or has been accidentally removed.
•The Ntoskrnl.exe or Hal.dll file is damaged.
•A program replaced system files that are critical to the operation of Windows.

However, one of my PC's has been working without problems for 2 years and has not been able to go into Safe Mode from the very start. However it may be germane that Windows XP is loaded onto the "D" rather than the "C" Drive.
