I am currently operating XP Home Edition on my laptop with 30GB HD.Is it possible to install XP Professional onto a plug in USB Hard Drive of 85GB, and is the procedure straightforward?

Probably not..........Even though I am a stick-in-the-mud, still with 98SE I think my reasons will apply across the board.

The computer cannot access anything connected with USB until it has booted the necessary USB drivers.

It probably is possible but it would mean altering the Master Boot Record and one slip without it being backed up and a format looms

Check in BIOS to see if can boot from usb device.

Some laptops have a USB floppy and can boot from them (compaq, IBM think pad done it with both of these) a usb harddrive therefore should be no different.
