Running in background

Whilst using Windows Explorer I noticed that the “arrow head” kept changing to the “hourglass”. I opened System Monitor from Start > Programs > Accessories > System Monitor, and this showed a recurring peak of 25% usage every 5 seconds. As far as I could see there was nothing else running and the problem only seemed to show in Windows Explorer. I have had a problem with things apparently running in the background before and ended up having the HDD reformatted which, apart from the current problem in Windows Explorer, seems to have worked.
I am running Windows 98SE with 512Mb RAM and a 10Gb HDD with over 6 Gb free.
Can anyone help please.

go to start>run and type msconfig

click on the startup tab and see what is in the list

If you recognise the programme then uncheck it
