rundll 32 error

when i plug in my toshiba usb hdd and try to open folders i get a message about "rundll32 error" or something, next thing explorer has stopped working, basically i can't open any files!
any ideas gratefully appreciated

when i open a folder on the usb hdd i get the message :

windows host process (rundll32) has stopped working

then windows explorer stops working

then internet explorer stops working

i have looked at the manual and it says it is a windows xp/2000 compatible device so i thought i might download a driver update, (my laptop is vista) but their support centre is useless...any ideas please?

ps. the device used to work with this same laptop without this problem)
