rundl32.exe problem

I keep an eye on a friend’s PC which had been misbehaving and so ran various anti-virus, anti-malware etc programmes in safe mode. AVG free found 73 bugs and seemingly dealt with 71 of them, SpySheriff stubbornly remaining. Spybot also found some nasties, some relatively harmless, others not so e.g. Smitfraud etc. I also used AVG to track down Adware Generic Sit and Adware Generic Sku.. However, having removed these and rebooted in normal mode I found that I the settings had changed and I could not access properties/control panel due to a rundl32.exe error problem. Any ideas as to how I can regain access to these features – would something like Registry Mechanic help, I wonder. Suggestions as to how to remove SpySheriff also welcome.
