Hi, I have got an old dell 400 laptop that has no floppy, hard drive or cd drive. I have no experience with linux but im just wondering if it is at all possible to boot and run a linux package like ubuntu from a usb pen drive without the cd and hdd?

First thing to check is if the laptop will boot from USB.

Some older ones will only boot from a USB floppy drive not a memory stick so you have to fool the machine into seeing the memory stick as a floppy drive.

Good advice. Another Linux worth looking at is click here if you are interested in 'cloud' computing. I'm currently running it from a USB stick but my netbook allows booting from USB devices.

In order to run Linux live, you need a reasonable amount of RAM and if it's a really old computer, how much has it got?

Puppy Linux may be one of your better bets, but without knowing the specs and as Fruitbat/\O/\ has already mentioned about booting from USB, it's impossible to provide a sensible answer.
